The Night Ministry: Chicago’s Community Comes Together to Help Young People Without Homes

A special event in Chicago called Night Lights is making a big difference for young people who don’t have homes. This yearly fundraiser, run by The Night Ministry’s Associate Board, has grown from a small local gathering into something much bigger that helps hundreds of young people find safe places to stay.

What is Night Lights and How Does it Help?

At the Night Lights event, people come together to enjoy food, drinks, and live music while raising money to help young people who need housing.

The event keeps growing stronger each year. In 2023, it raised over $90,000; the most recent event brought in $107,000. Since 2012, the Associate Board has raised more than $450,000 through Night Lights to support The The Night Ministry’s programs.

The Crib: A Safe Place for Young Adults

The money raised at Night Lights goes directly to help The Crib, an overnight shelter for young adults who don’t have stable housing. Last year, The Crib provided more than 230 young people with safe spaces and support.

The shelter’s work is vital during Chicago’s cold winters. Between January and March alone, The Night Ministry gave out:

  • 345 winter coats
  • 310 blankets
  • 7,200 pairs of socks
  • 86 tents

These supplies help protect young people from dangerous winter weather conditions and health risks that come with not having a stable place to live.

Who Makes Night Lights Happen?

The Night Light Ministry’s Associate Board organizes Night Lights and works year-round to help young people who need housing. This group of young professionals connects with Chicago residents through:

  • Volunteer work

Looking Ahead: Building on Success

The growing success of Night Lights shows that more people in Chicago want to help solve youth homelessness. As described in The Night Light Ministry’s newsletter, the increased funding helps them maintain and expand their services.

The Night Ministry plans to keep growing its support for young people through community outreach and youth programs. Their success shows how local groups can make real changes in their communities. By participating in events like Night Lights 2024, community members directly help young people get the shelter, healthcare, and basic supplies they need.

Communities working together with care and purpose can create positive change. The Night Lights event proves that when people come together to help others, they can improve life for young people who need support the most.
